AN INTERVIEW WITH THE HU! “It’s our job to let people know about Mongolian history and culture!”

Th HU are a Hunnu Rock band from Mongolia! They formed in 2016 and have released one album so far, their September 2019 release of The Gereg, which features nine tracks, including the singles Yuve Yuve YuWolf Totem, The Great Chinggis Khaan, and more. They are set to release their follow up album later in the year! 

Their band consists of nine members when they are performing live. The lineup consists of four main members. Gala Tsendbaatar, who plays the morin khuur, which is a two string horsehead fiddle. Throat vocalist Jaya Galsanjamts, who plays the tsuur, an end blown flute, and the tumur hhuur, known as a jaw harp. Throat vocalist Enkush Batjargal also plays the morin khuur. Temka Narabaatar plays the tovshuur, a three string wooden lute.

While on tour, they also have guitarist and backing vocalist, Jamba Ayush, percussionist and tumur hhuur player, Ono Maralkhuu, drummer Odko Gantumur, and bassist and backing vocalist, Davaa Byambaa.

Fan Facts: They released a Deluxe Version of The Gereg in 2020 featuring collaborations with Lzzy Hale, Jacoby Shaddix, and Danny Case.

Their song Sugaan Essena also known as “Black Thunder” was featured in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

The HU released a new song, This Is Mongol which will be featured on their upcoming album. The song is also featured in the upcoming Horror film, The Retaliators featuring Katie Kelly, Joseph Gatt, Michael Lombardi, Marc Menchaca, Tommy Lee, Ivan Moody, Zoltan Bathory, Chris Kael, and even The HU’s own, Jaya, who makes an appearance as “Man In The Box“. The film is set to hit theatres worldwide on September 14th, 2022!

On May 2nd, we interviewed Enkush [left in the video] and Gala from The HU while they were in Fargo, ND for the special Jade Presents concert at The Sanctuary Events Center on their Black Thunder tour with The Haunt, who we also interviewed – check it out here!

In our interview Gala and Enkush discuss the Spirituality within The HU’s Music, their next album which is set to release later this year, as well as their favorite Pantera and Metallica songs, including their cover of Sad But True, which was released in 2020. Their producer, Dashka translated the lyrics into their own language. It is something they talk about in the interview! 

They also discuss more about Dashka’s role in the band. He’s worked on The HU for nearly a decade and writes the lyrics of their songs. He is the person behind connecting Western and Mongolian Traditional Music.

Fan Fact: The HU released another Metallica cover for the Blacklist album, an album comprising of over 50 songs by all different Artists from throughout the world covering songs from Metallica’s Black Album.

Gala and Enkush also talk about their favorite concert experiences, one being the Danny Wimmer Presents Louder Than Life Festival that’s held in Louisville, Kentucky each year, and another favorite being Rock Am Ring Festival, held in Nuremberg, Germany every Summer!

They discussed how their Music has a lot of positive energy, and letting people know that Love and Mother Nature are really important to them as the messages they want to get across to their fans. They also say it’s their job to let people know about their Mongolian history and culture! Gala talked about how he enjoys listening to Mongolian Long Songs to help his mood. 

The Rock recently posted a video on his Instagram page using The Hu’s song Wolf Totem and promoting his new film, Black Adam which hits theatres on October 21st! The film also features Sarah Shahi, Uli Latukefu, Quintessa Swindell, Pierce Brosnan, Natalie Burn, Joseph Gatt, who is also is one of the main characters in The Retaliators, and many more!

Fan Facts: Wolf Totem is their second single off of The Gereg. They also released a version of the song with Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach which is also featured as one of the tracks heard in The Retaliators! Check out that version above!
